For centuries, this valley in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains was shaped by the Keowee River, Cherokee heritage, and the Blue Ridge Escarpment. The name “Keowee”, meaning "Place of the Mulberries," reflects an historic Cherokee settlement once located nearby.
- In the late 1960s, Duke Energy’s Keowee-Toxaway Project transformed the valley into Lake Keowee - an 18,500- acre reservoir with over 300 miles of shoreline – now one of the Southeast’s premier lake environments
- Keowee Key was established in 1972 as a private residential community, thoughtfully designed to preserve the natural forest and prioritize privacy and security
- By the 1980s and 1990s, governance transitioned to a member-led Property Owners Association, placing stewardship in the hands of property owners
- Today, our Single Amenity Support (SAS) allows continued investment in amenities, infrastructure, and preserved land, promoting property values, financial stability, and a high quality of life
